I want real red hair. As in not overphotoshopped Donna!hair.

I have redish hair now, but a darker, bit purple-ish shade which I like but I'm bored with it now. Also, it's kinda faded.

Three problems:
  • one: I'm not sure that a lighter shade of L'Oreal Casting Creme Gloss (which I always use) would have an effect on my dark hair
  • two: my mother would freak out if I'd use actual hair dye. I guess she doesn't want my hair to end up like hers after having it permed for 20 years. I get her but those are not the same thing. Whatever, I'd be a little worried too.
  • three: even if I can get that colour on my hair, what if it does not look good on me? (I think it has to look good on me. I never had natural red hair but I have lots of freckles, pale skin and green eyes - which is almost blue. ;) I guess I'm an almost-redhead. I just born into the wrong body. LOL)
L'Oreal has two very different red shades I'd be interested in:

I'm not sure if Amber would even show up on my dark hair. It says "from blonde to brown", but who knows.
Also, this may be too light for me. I dunno. On the other hand, I tried lots of Casting colours over the years and they were always darker on me than on the ladies on the boxes.

Mahogany has a little more chance of surviving after applied to my hair and it looks good.
However, it may be too dark. If I could get the colour exactly as on the box I'd have no worries. But see above. (If it's too dark then it's very very similar to my previous hair colours. Not good for a girl who wants some change.)

I know, very very big problems. Sorry to bother you with this. :)

I worked in a hair salon for 2 years and I've dyed my hair many a time, so I may be able to offer some adequate help.
If your hair is on the darker side your best bet is to bleach it first to ensure that the color takes fully- kind of like a "blank canvas". From what I can gather, this method is not quite up your alley, but if you do choose that first color choice and put it on darker hair, you'll have some color facets that'll catch in the sunlight most noticibly...or, you just get about maybe five or six times darker than what's shown on the box.
But, if you're already sort of red, or brownish-red, it will look AWESOME and enhanced.
Or, it might not take at all depending on how close to dark brown or black your hair is. Tough luck, but that usually happens and then you've wasted a box of dye.
With that second choice, it'll have a better chance of taking on darker hair, but the shade will be more purple- nothing like Donna's red.
If you screw up, Walgreens or salons sell hair dye removal cream- perfectly safe to use on your hair within the first two hours of your goof-up. Otherwise you might have to dye OVER the dye.
But no worries, dyes are really easy to use.

Thanks!

I know the second one is not Donna-red but I'm considering it cause, you know, I have a better chance with that.

My hair is something like medium/light brown with some red left in it. I might have a teeny-tiny chance. :) I think I'll try that. If it looks awful, whatever, I'll dye it again. :D

I know using bleach would be the best but I'm not ready for that. :D

i'm not allowed to use ANY kind of coloring on my hair, so shut the fuck up and try one of these. (the first one.)

your second choice seems kinda like how you describe your hair as now... doesn't it?

and you've only used casting before as opposed to actual hair dye, right?

here is my experience with my hair - my real hair is a medium dark brown color, not too coarse and not too thin and pretty curly but it will straighten if I use a flat iron on it. If I put your second choice of color on my natural hair, it would turn a little darker than the girl on the box, even though my natural hair is about the same color as the "before" picture on the box. It would light up deep red in the sunlight, and look like a dark red-brown under dimmer light. The deep red color would fade quickly and eventually, after about three months, my hair would be a lighter reddish-brown. See, because you are using dye, and not just casting color, there is peroxide/ammonium already in the dye. All in one step, it will make your hair lighter and then put color on over top of it. That is how you get a more noticeable result as opposed to a color cast. But eventually the color will fade (especially red) and your hair will be lighter underneath.

That first choice would turn my hair a few shades lighter than what is on the box. I've done something like it before and it was horrible for me, but you seem like someone that would look really good on. I think you could pull it off - you said you have a redhead's complexion, right? Thinking of your pictures, I'd say you could probably pass for a natural redhead, even. You might be a little surprised, though, when you look in the mirror, just how much lighter your hair turns after you dye it - but I think it would look good OH WAIT

I just noticed that these dyes are casting color too... in that case, they're not going to turn your hair lighter, and the top one will look totally different on your hair than the girl in the picture. Especially if you have color in your hair already. If you want to get that color, you need to use real dye - without ammonia or peroxide, your hair will only turn darker. I think that if you put that first color over your current color, you'll just get sorta reddish highlights when the light hits your hair, and maybe a reddish tint all over.

ANYWAYZ. That's all my hair dye knowledge for now.

That first one is the exact shade of hair I want. I absolutely covet it.

If you have darker brown hair, go with the first one. I have dark dark brown hair, and I've always found that, if I don't feel like bleaching my hair (which is pretty much always), the lighter colors tend to show up better, especially in the light. And if it doesn't work out, then you can always go darker.

Personally, I like the first on better. But the second one is gorgeous too!
